The True Meaning of Still
I used to read this verse as a gentle invitation. Like God was quietly patting the seat beside Him, saying come sit down, it is nice here.
Then I looked up what "be still" actually means in the Hebrew. The word is raphah. It means to let go, to drop, to cease striving. Almost like setting down something heavy you have been carrying for so long you forgot you were holding it.
Less of a suggestion. More of a firm and loving: put that down.
Because God knows us. He knows that we are very good at filling silence. With plans, with noise, with the running commentary in our heads about everything we have not done yet. Stillness does not come naturally to most of us. We have to choose it. And sometimes we have to choose it about forty-seven times before it actually sticks.
The knowing comes after the stopping.
Notice the structure of the verse. Be still, and then know. The knowing is not separate from the stillness. It flows out of it.
We want to know God from the middle of our busy lives, scrolling through a verse on our phone between meetings. And He meets us there. He really does. But there is a kind of knowing that only happens when we actually stop. When we put down the phone and sit with Him in the quiet for five minutes without an agenda.
Not because we have to. Because we want to know Him better. And some things about Him, you can only learn when the room is quiet enough to hear them.
What stillness is not.
It is not about clearing your mind completely. That is a different tradition. Christian stillness is not emptying. It is orienting. You are not trying to think nothing. You are turning your attention toward Someone.
It is okay if your mind wanders. It is okay if you sit down to be still and immediately remember the thing you forgot to email back. Just gently come back. That is not failure. That is actually the practice.
Speak This Out Loud
I choose to be still. I set down the noise, the plans, the worry. I orient my heart toward God. In the quiet, I will know Him. And He will be exalted.
Today's Challenge
Set a timer for five minutes. Sit in silence. Not to clear your mind, but to turn your attention toward God. When your mind wanders, gently come back. Do this once today, and notice what you hear.

- What does stillness feel like in my body?
- What did I learn about God in the quiet?
Reflection Questions
- What am I currently carrying that God might be asking me to set down, even just for a few minutes today?
- Do I trust that stillness will lead to knowing?
- What is preventing me from being still?
Today's Prayer
God, I will be honest. Stillness is not easy for me. My brain does not really have an off switch, and silence can feel a little uncomfortable. But I want to know You. And I trust that if I stop long enough, You will show me something I have been missing. So here I am. I am putting it down. Meet me in this. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Final Word
Be still, and then know. The order matters. You cannot know Him in the middle of your running commentary. You have to stop. Set it down. He is there, waiting. But you have to stop running long enough to see Him.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
