I have a question for you. When you think about your relationship with God, what image comes to mind? A shepherd and sheep? A father and child? A bride and groom?
All of those are beautiful. But there is another image in Scripture that we do not talk about enough. It is the image of God as a builder, and us as His building.
Paul uses this exact language in First Corinthians. He writes:
"For we are God's building."
1 Corinthians 3:9We are not just saved. We are not just rescued. We are being built. There is a construction project happening, and you are the building.
The Foundation and the Structure
In this passage, Paul is addressing the Corinthian church, who were dividing themselves over which preacher they followed. Some said they were of Paul. Others said they were of Apollos. They were treating their spiritual leaders like sports teams to root for.
Paul's response is fascinating. He says both he and Apollos are simply servants. Paul planted the foundation. Apollos watered it. But the building itself is God's work.
Paul uses three metaphors in quick succession. We are God's field, God's building, and God's temple. Each one reveals something different about how God sees us and what He is doing in us.
The foundation is Christ. That is already laid. No one can lay any other foundation. But then the building goes up. And each believer is like a stone being placed in the structure.
You Are Part of Something Being Built
Here is what strikes me most. You are not just standing outside looking at the building. You ARE the building. Every believer is a living stone being placed in the structure.
Peter picks up this same image. He writes:
"As you come to him, the living stone, rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him, you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house."
1 Peter 2:4-5You are a living stone. Not a dead rock being stacked. A living stone, being built into something holy, something eternal, something that will last forever.
This changes how you see your struggle. The difficult days, the hard seasons, the painful growth. These are not random. They are the builder's hands shaping you into something eternal.
The Temple of God
But there is more. Paul writes not just that we ARE the building, but that we are becoming a temple. A holy dwelling place for God Himself.
"Do you not know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?"
1 Corinthians 3:16Think about that. The same God who spoke the universe into existence, who holds all things together, who is everywhere at once. He dwells in you. You are His temple.
This is not a metaphor for something else. It is literal reality. The Spirit of the living God lives in you. Not as a visitor. Not as a guest. As the one who fills and surrounds and transforms.
The Builder Is Still Working
The construction is not finished. The builder is still at work. Some days you feel like a stone being carefully placed. Some days you feel like you are being chiseled and shaped in ways that hurt. But the project is ongoing. And the one who began the good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
What This Means For Today
Here is what I want you to take away. You are not an accident. You are not just a soul that God saved and then left to figure things out. You are a project. A building. A temple.
And the builder is faithful. He does not abandon His projects halfway through. He does not walk away from His own building.
Whatever stage you are in, whatever the building looks like right now, know this. The one who built you is still building. And He does not make mistakes.
"I will not move my eyes from you, for you are a jewel of mine in a rich crown."
Isaiah 62:3Father, thank you that I am your building, not an abandoned project. Help me to trust that you are faithfully constructing me into something eternal. Give me patience when I feel like being chiseled and shaped, knowing the builder makes no mistakes.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
