About nine in the morning Jesus came from Nazareth, and the soldiers brought him to Pilate. They came to the place called the Place of Skull, and they crucified Jesus. Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.
Luke 23:33-34 (NCV)Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, Sit here while I go over there and pray. He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, and he began to be sad and troubled.
Matthew 26:36-37 (NCV)When There Are No Words
What happens when the music stops? What happens when there are no words? What happens when the only worship you can give is your presence in the darkness?
This is the kind of worship we do not talk about in the church. We talk about worship as though it is always joyful, always celebratory, always about singing. But some of the deepest worship in Scripture happens in silence.
Job's Worship
Job lost everything. His children. His wealth. His health. His friends came and told him it was his fault. His wife told him to curse God and die. And what did Job do? He fell to the ground and worshipped.
He did not understand why. He did not have answers. He did not have a song. But he worshipped.
That is worship. Not understanding. Not having answers. Just trusting that God is still God even when nothing makes sense.
Habakkuk's Worship
Habakkuk was a prophet who watched his nation collapse. He saw violence, destruction, injustice. And he cried out to God. But God did not answer the way Habakkuk wanted. Instead, God told him things would get worse before they got better.
And what did Habakkuk do? He wrote a song. He said, Even if the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, even if the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, even if there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation.
That is worship. Not based on circumstances. Not based on feelings. Based on who God is.
Gethsemane
The night before Jesus died, He went to Gethsemane to pray. He was in anguish. He was sweating blood. He asked His Father if there was any other way.
And then He prayed: Not my will, but yours be done.
That is worship. Surrender in the darkness. Trust even when you do not understand. Laying down your life even when it costs everything.
Worship in the Hard Place
Today, if you are in a hard place, worship without music. Just be still. Just trust. Let your silence be an act of worship.
- What is the hardest thing you are facing right now?
- What does worship look like in the middle of that?
- How has your faith been tested by difficulty?
- What would it look like to trust God even in the silence?
- Is there something you are struggling to worship through?
- What would it look like to trust God without understanding?
- How can you worship in the silence today?
Father, I do not understand what is happening in my life. I have questions You have not answered. I have pain You have not taken away.
But even now, I choose to trust You. Even now, I choose to worship. Even now, I say: Not my will, but Yours be done.
Teach me to worship in the silence. Teach me to trust in the darkness. You are still God. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Tomorrow is the final day. We are going to talk about the call to do better. Not guilt. Not shame. Just an honest invitation to return to what God actually asked for.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
