The Unpardonable Sin: What It Is and How to Avoid It

7 min read

Jesus said there is an unpardonable sin. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Most churches never explain it, but it is in Scripture. Here is what Jesus actually said.

There is a verse in the Gospels that makes many Christians deeply uncomfortable. It is a warning from Jesus about a sin that cannot be forgiven.

It appears in all three Synoptic Gospels. That alone tells you it is important. Jesus said it multiple times, in multiple contexts, and multiple followers recorded it.

"And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

Matthew 12:32

Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. Not in this age. Not in the age to come. Never.

What Is It?

Jesus said this in a specific context. The religious leaders had just accused Him of being demon-possessed. They had seen the Holy Spirit at work in Jesus' ministry, and they had attributed that work to the devil.

That is what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is. It is seeing the work of God, recognizing it as the work of God, and then attributing it to the devil.

It is a deliberate, knowing rejection of the testimony of the Holy Spirit. It is not a mistake. It is not a doubt. It is a hardened, willful rejection.

Why It Is Unforgivable

Why is this sin unforgivable? Because it cuts off the very means of forgiveness.

All forgiveness comes through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit convicts us of sin. The Spirit reveals Christ to us. The Spirit applies the work of Christ to our hearts.

If you actively reject the Holy Spirit, you cut yourself off from the only means of grace. There is no other way to be forgiven. No other source of forgiveness.

That is why it is unforgivable. Not because God does not want to forgive. But because the person has rejected the only way to be forgiven.

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is not a single bad thought or a moment of doubt. It is a deliberate, hardened rejection of the Holy Spirit's testimony about Christ. It is seeing the light and calling it darkness, knowing it is light.

How to Know You Have Not Committed It

If you are worried about having committed this sin, here is a simple test. Are you worried about it? Do you care? Do you want to be forgiven?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you have not committed the unpardonable sin.

The person who commits this sin does not care. They are not worried. They have hardened their hearts completely. They have rejected the Spirit entirely.

If you are concerned about your spiritual state, that is evidence that you have not committed this sin. The very fact that you care proves you have not hardened your heart completely.

✦ A Moment to Sit With

Do Not Harden Your Heart

The unpardonable sin is not a mystery to figure out. It is a warning to heed. Do not reject the Holy Spirit's work in your life. Do not attribute the work of God to the devil. That is the path to destruction. Stay soft. Stay open. Keep responding to the Spirit.

The Warning

Jesus gave this warning for a reason. He wanted His followers to take the work of the Holy Spirit seriously. He wanted them to recognize it, receive it, and not reject it.

If you are reading this, you have the opportunity to respond to the Holy Spirit. Do not reject Him. Do not harden your heart. Receive the grace that is offered.

That is the way of life. That is the narrow gate. Choose it today.

"Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."

Hebrews 4:7
✦ ✦ ✦

Holy Spirit, thank You for Your convicting and guiding work in my life. Help me to never reject Your testimony about Christ. Keep my heart soft and open to Your grace. In Jesus Name, Amen.

With honesty and hope,
