The night before His crucifixion, Jesus made a promise that must have seemed impossible to His grieving disciples. He was leaving. And yet He told them it was better that He go, because if He went, He would send the Helper. The Comforter. The One who would not just be with them, but would be in them.
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever: the Spirit of truth."
John 14:16‑17The Holy Spirit is not a consolation prize for the absence of Jesus. He is the very presence of Jesus, and the Father, dwelling within every believer. This is the staggering reality of the New Covenant: God does not just visit us. He lives in us.
The Spirit as Guide
One of the most practical and precious ministries of the Holy Spirit is guidance. We live in a world full of decisions, crossroads, and uncertainty. And the Spirit of God, who knows all things, who sees all ends, who holds all wisdom, lives within you specifically to lead you through it.
"When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth."
John 16:13He guides through Scripture, bringing specific verses alive at specific moments. He guides through inner peace, that deep sense of settledness when you are moving in the right direction. He guides through the counsel of wise believers. He guides through circumstance. And sometimes, He guides through a still, clear inner voice that you simply know is not your own.
Learning to Follow His Lead
Bring Every Decision to Him
Before you decide, whether it is something major like a career change or something minor like how to respond to a difficult email, pause and ask. "Holy Spirit, what do You think?" You may be surprised how often He has something to say when you take the time to ask.
Learn to Recognize His Peace
Colossians 3:15 says to let the peace of Christ act as an umpire in your heart. The Spirit often communicates through the presence or absence of peace. Learn to notice when it is there and when it is not, and trust that inner signal.
Test What You Sense
Not every impression is the Spirit, some are our own desires or fears. Test what you sense against Scripture. Does it align with the character of Jesus? Does it produce love, peace, and life? Wise discernment is itself a gift of the Spirit.
Ask the Spirit to Lead You Today
Before you begin your day, pray: "Holy Spirit, I invite You to lead me today. Show me where to go, what to say, who needs my attention. I do not want to live this day on autopilot: I want to follow Your lead." Then stay attentive. Notice the nudges. Follow the peace. And watch what happens when you let Him guide.
You are not navigating this life alone. You have the Spirit of the living God as your personal guide, counselor, and companion. He knows the way through every valley and over every mountain you will ever face.
Trust Him. Follow Him. He has never lost anyone He was leading.
Holy Spirit, thank You for being my guide and counselor. Teach me to recognize Your voice and follow Your leading. Give me discernment to test what I sense against Your Word. Lead me through every decision today. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
