One of the most misunderstood aspects of the Holy Spirit work is the gift of prophecy. For some, it conjures images of dramatic proclamations and end-times predictions. For others, it has been so misused that they want nothing to do with it. But strip away the caricatures, and what you find is one of the most practically beautiful gifts God has given His people.
Paul describes it simply:
"The one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort."
1 Corinthians 14:3Strengthening. Encouraging. Comfort. This is not an exotic, frightening gift reserved for specialists. It is the Spirit-empowered ability to speak words that build people up, words that carry the heart of the Father for a specific person in a specific moment.
The Everyday Nature of Prophetic Encouragement
Have you ever had a moment where someone said exactly the right thing at exactly the right time, something they could not have known you needed? That is often the Holy Spirit working through an ordinary person who chose to be attentive and obedient.
You do not need to be a prophet to operate in prophetic encouragement. You need to be willing to pay attention to what the Spirit puts on your heart for someone else, and then have the courage to share it.
How to Begin
Ask the Spirit About the People Around You
When you are with someone, a friend, a colleague, a family member, try asking the Holy Spirit quietly: "What do You want to say to this person today?" Then pay attention to what rises in you: an impression, a Scripture, a sense of what they need to hear.
Share With Humility
You do not have to declare "Thus says the Lord!" You can simply say: "I felt like I should tell you..." or "I do not know if this means anything to you, but..." Humility protects both you and the person you are speaking to.
Keep It Encouraging
Genuine prophetic encouragement strengthens and comforts. If what you feel impressed to share would tear down rather than build up, hold it back and bring it to God instead. The Spirit voice always aligns with the character of Jesus.
One Word of Encouragement
Think of one person in your life today. Ask the Holy Spirit: "What do You want to say to them?" Sit quietly for a moment and notice what comes. Then, if it is encouraging and kind, find a way to share it. A text, a card, a conversation. Let the Spirit use you to strengthen someone today.
The world is starving for words that build up. You carry the Spirit of the living God, which means you carry the ability to speak life into every room you enter. Do not hold it back. Let the Spirit speak through you today.
Holy Spirit, thank You for the gift of prophetic encouragement. Help me to be attentive to what You want to say to the people around me. Give me the courage to share encouraging words that build up and strengthen. Use me to speak life into every room I enter. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
