What does it mean to be strong in faith? Most of us think it means never doubting. Never struggling. Never questioning.
But that is not what Scripture says.
Paul writes about Abraham in Romans. He says:
"Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead, since he was about a hundred years old, and that Sarah's womb was also dead."
Romans 4:19He faced the facts. He saw the impossibility. And he did not weaken in his faith.
That is not the absence of doubt. That is the presence of faith in the midst of what looks impossible.
What Strong Faith Looks Like
Here is what strong faith is not. It is not blind optimism. It is not pretending everything is fine when it is not. It is not ignoring reality.
Abraham faced the facts. He knew his body was as good as dead. He knew Sarah womb was dead. He saw the impossibility clearly.
And he believed God anyway.
The word for "strong in faith" in the original Greek is endunamoo, which means to be strengthened, to be empowered, to be enabled. Strong faith is not something you manufacture. It is something you are given as you trust.
That is the kind of faith God wants to build in us. Not faith that ignores reality, but faith that looks at reality and decides to believe God anyway.
Strong Meat vs. Milk
The writer of Hebrews picks up this same theme. He writes about the difference between those who are still on milk and those who are ready for solid food:
"But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil."
Hebrews 5:14Solid food is for the mature. Not for those who have been Christians the longest. Not for those who know the most Bible facts. But for those whose powers of discernment have been trained by constant practice.
That is interesting. Maturity comes from practice. From doing. From repeatedly choosing to trust God until trust becomes natural.
The Call to Maturity
What is the implication here? It is that we are all called to maturity. Not to stay babies forever. Not to keep drinking milk while everyone around us is eating meat.
We are called to grow. To strengthen. To train our discernment. To become people who can look at impossible situations and still believe God.
This is not optional. This is the call of every believer.
How to Grow in Faith
So how do we get strong in faith? Paul tells us in Romans. He says faith comes from hearing the message about Christ.
"Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ."
Romans 10:17We get strong in faith by hearing and receiving the word of Christ. By saturating ourselves in Scripture. By making the message of Christ the foundation of everything we think and do.
But it is not just hearing. It is also doing. James tells us that faith without works is dead. Faith grows by being exercised.
The more you trust God in small things, the stronger your faith becomes for the big things. Every act of obedience is weight training for your faith.
God wants you strong. He wants you mature. He wants you ready for strong meat. And He is faithful to build that strength in you as you keep trusting Him.
"I can do all things through him who strengthens me."
Philippians 4:13Where Is Your Faith?
Think about where you are right now. Are you still drinking milk, looking for the easy answers? Or are you ready for strong meat, willing to face the hard questions and trust God anyway? Maturity is not a destination. It is a direction. Keep growing.
Father, thank You for the gift of faith. Strengthen me to be strong in faith, even when I face impossible situations. Teach me to trust You even when the facts seem overwhelming. Help me to grow in maturity and to be ready for strong meat. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
