There is a strange tension in the air lately.
You can feel it in conversations that turn sharp too quickly. In headlines that leave us either numb or on edge. In the quiet anxiety that settles in even when life looks mostly fine on the outside.
Many people sense that something is shifting, but they are not quite sure how to name it. The ground does not feel stable. The things we counted on do not feel certain anymore.
What has stayed with me is this. Jesus anticipated that feeling. And instead of telling His followers to be afraid, He told them to be discerning. He spoke about shifts calmly, without panic, almost as if He expected us to stay steady while the world around us grew louder.
This is what we need right now. Not fear. Discernment. Not panic. Presence.
Jesus Spoke Calmly About Unsettling Times
When Jesus talked about the future, He did not begin with dates or disasters. He began with a warning that feels remarkably relevant right now.
He said, "Watch out that no one deceives you."
Not watch out for suffering. Not watch out for hardship. Watch out for deception.
"Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many."
Matthew 24:4-5Jesus understood something we often forget. The greatest danger to the human heart is not chaos, but confusion. Not pressure, but persuasion. Not persecution, but slowly believing things that sound almost true.
He spoke these words without panic. Almost as if He expected His followers to stay steady while the world around them grew louder.
And then there is what He says in Mark:
"As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. 'Tell us,' they said, 'when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?' And Jesus answered: 'Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in My name, claiming, I am the Christ, and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. And these are the beginning of the birth pains."
Mark 13:3-8These are the beginning of the birth pains.
Not the end. The beginning.
That is what Jesus said. Wars and rumors of wars. Earthquakes in various places. Famines. Nation against nation. Kingdom against kingdom.
And He said: Watch out that no one deceives you. See to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
Not: Do not be affected. Not: Do not feel it. But: Do not be alarmed. Do not panic. Do not lose heart.
Because these things must happen. They are the beginning. They are not the end.
Deception Rarely Announces Itself
Deception does not usually arrive wearing darkness.
It often comes wrapped in urgency. In fear for the future. In outrage that feels justified. In language that sounds compassionate and reasonable. It comes with a good cause, a right indignation, a justified anger.
This is why Jesus did not tell His disciples to watch the world. He told them to watch themselves.
He knew how easily our loves become disordered when we feel threatened. How quickly discernment gives way to reaction. How subtly fear can disguise itself as conviction.
The Bible never assumes we will automatically see clearly. It assumes we will need to stay close to Him.
And then there is what He says about the ones who come claiming to be Christ:
"At that time if anyone says to you, Look, here is the Christ! or there He is! Do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the chosen, if that were possible."
Mark 13:21-22They will perform great signs and miracles to deceive.
Not obviously false. Convincingly true. That is what makes deception dangerous.
And then listen to what comes next:
"So be on your guard. I have told you all this in advance."
Mark 13:23I have told you all this in advance.
That is the key. He told them in advance. He is telling us in advance. Why? So that when it happens, we are not deceived. So that when the shifts come, we are not alarmed.
This is grace. This is mercy. He could have let us be surprised. Instead, He warned us.
Informed Is Not the Same as Formed
We live in a time where information is constant, but formation is rare.
We know what is happening everywhere, all the time. But knowing more does not mean we are being shaped more. Often it means we are being shaped less.
Jesus never told His followers to stay informed. He told them to abide.
Abiding slows us down. Abiding roots us. Abiding teaches us how to recognize His voice when many others are competing for our attention.
Discernment is not sharpened by outrage. It is sharpened by intimacy.
I know this in my own life. I know what it is to read the news and feel my heart race. I know what it is to scroll through social media and feel anxious. I know what it is to talk about the shifts and feel afraid.
And I know what it is to stop. To be still. To abide. To hear His voice again.
That is the difference. That is what we need.
The Invitation Has Not Changed
Jesus did not give His disciples a strategy for controlling the future. He gave them Himself.
He invited them to stay awake, not alarmed. To stay grounded, not reactive. To stay faithful, even when clarity feels hard won.
"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away."
Matthew 24:35This is not a threat. It is a comfort.
The world may be shifting. The ground may be shaking. But His words will never pass away.
And then there is this final promise:
"Now when these things begin to take place, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near."
Luke 21:28Your redemption draws near.
Not your destruction. Your redemption.
That is what we watch for. Not the shifts. Him. His return. Our redemption.
Consider This
Where has your attention been shaped lately? What voices have been loudest? What emotions have been guiding your reactions?
This is not about fear. It is about focus. Jesus is not asking us to withdraw from the world. He is asking us to stay rooted in Him while we live in it.
Abide. That is the invitation. That is what produces discernment. That is what produces steadiness in the shifting.
Something may be shifting. But the One who holds all things steady has not moved.
Stay close. Stay humble. Stay awake. Abide.
Father, keep me close to You in these shifting times. Give me discernment to see through deception and wisdom to know truth from noise. Help me to abide in You rather than be shaped by the world around me. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
