You used to be busy. Really busy. There was always somewhere to be, something to do, someone who needed you. And now it is quiet. Really quiet. The house is empty. The alarm clock is gone. And you wake up in the morning wondering what you are supposed to do now.
Retirement is one of those things nobody talks about in the church. We celebrate graduations and marriages and new babies, but we do not know what to do with people whose main season of life is over.
But this is a real season. And it can be one of the most beautiful ones, if you let it.
The Identity Shift
For most of your life, you were defined by what you did. You were a teacher, a nurse, a business owner, a mom, a dad. And now those titles are gone or fading. And you feel like you lost yourself somewhere along the way.
But here is the truth: you were never your job. You were never your title. You were always a child of God, and that has not changed.
"Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to every one who is to come."
Psalm 71:18David wrote this when he was old. And he was not done. He was going to declare God power to the next generation.
The New Calling
Retirement does not mean you are done. It means you are free. Free from the obligations and expectations of the first half. Free to invest in the things that actually matter.
This is the time to mentor. To pour into young families. To pray like you never have before. To read Scripture without a deadline. To go deeper with God than you ever could when you were busy.
The second half is not a decline. It is a different harvest. And God has something for you to do in it.
For the One Who Feels Done
If you are in this season and you feel useless, hear me: you are not. The world tells you that once you stop producing, you are done. But God does not work that way.
You have wisdom that the younger generation needs. You have time to pray in ways that busy people cannot. You have experience that cannot be taught any other way than through lived years.
You are not finished. You are just starting a new chapter. And it might be the best one yet.
What Is God Doing in This Season
If you are in the second half of life, ask God to show you what He has for you now. You may be surprised. The quiet season might be the most fruitful one yet.
Father, thank you that my value is not in what I do but in who I am in you. Help me to embrace this new season with purpose, to use the wisdom you have given me, and to trust that you still have work for me to do. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
