"Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace."
Judges 6:24 (NIV)"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
John 14:27 (NIV)When Politics Becomes Our Source of Anxiety
In an age of constant political outrage, social media battles, and fears about who holds power, many of us find our peace constantly disrupted. We worry about elections, legislation, cultural shifts, and whether our side will prevail, often allowing politics to become an idol that steals our tranquility.
In these moments of political anxiety, God reveals Himself as Yahweh-Shalom, the Lord Is Peace. This name, revealed when Gideon built an altar after encountering the Angel of the Lord, reminds us that true, lasting peace does not come from favorable political outcomes but from the very presence of God.
Peace That Transcends Political Circumstances
Yahweh-Shalom does not promise we will never face political turmoil or that our preferred candidates will always win. Instead, He offers a peace that surpasses understanding, a tranquility that guards our hearts and minds regardless of who sits in positions of power.
This peace enables us to engage in civic responsibilities without losing our souls, love those with whom we politically disagree, trust God's ultimate sovereignty over nations and leaders, and find rest even when the political landscape feels chaotic.
Finding Peace in Divine Sovereignty
When we anchor our peace in Yahweh-Shalom rather than political stability, we find freedom from constant outrage and fear. We can release the idol of political control and embrace God's ultimate authority, pray for leaders even those we dislike without compromising our convictions, and maintain relationships across political divides.
Political Peace Step
Consider one practical step toward political peace, whether that is taking a break from news, praying for someone with different views, or reaffirming your trust in God's sovereignty.
- How has politics become a source of anxiety for me? What am I worrying about?
- What would it look like to find peace that transcends political circumstances?
- Who is someone I need to love across a political divide?
- Am I allowing politics to steal my peace and become an idol?
- Am I trusting political outcomes more than God's sovereignty?
- Can I maintain relationships across political divides?
Your political anxieties do not surprise God. Yahweh-Shalom sees your worries about elections, policies, and power struggles, and invites you to find your peace in Him, not in political parties, ideologies, or election results.
Yahweh-Shalom, thank You for being the Lord Is Peace. Help me to find my peace in You, not in political outcomes. Remind me that You are sovereign over all nations and authorities. Help me to release the idol of political control and embrace Your ultimate authority. Help me to love those with whom I politically disagree. In Jesus Name, Amen.
