How to Know God's Will

6 min read

God is not hiding His will from you. He is far more eager for you to know it than you are to find it. A practical guide to discernment.

The most common question I hear from people who genuinely want to live for God is this: How do I know what God's will is for my life? It is asked with such earnestness, such longing, as if God's will is a secret He is reluctant to share, and our job is to somehow decode it before we make a wrong move.

But Scripture paints a very different picture. God is not hiding His will from you. He is far more eager for you to know it than you are to find it.

"For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose."

Philippians 2:13

God is working in you, actively, continuously, to align your desires and your actions with His purposes. Your job is not to perfectly decode a hidden plan. Your job is to stay close enough to hear His voice and responsive enough to follow when He speaks.

The Will of God Is Broader Than You Think

We tend to think of God's will as a single, specific path, one right job, one right city, one right decision, and everything else is outside His will. But the will of God is more like a field than a tightrope. Within the boundaries of His character, His Word, and His kingdom purposes, there is enormous freedom to live, choose, and create.

Much of God's will is already clearly revealed, love one another, pursue justice, walk humbly, be filled with the Spirit, give generously, forgive freely. Living these things faithfully will never lead you outside His will.

How to Discern His Specific Direction

Before seeking specific direction, saturate yourself in Scripture. God rarely gives specific guidance to someone who has not engaged with the general guidance He has already provided. His Word shapes the mind that can then hear His voice clearly.

Psalm 37:4 says God gives us the desires of our heart, which can mean He places those desires there. What do you love? What are you gifted at? Where does your passion meet a genuine need in the world? These intersections are often where calling lives.

Proverbs says there is safety in a multitude of counselors. Share what you are sensing with people who know you well, love God deeply, and will speak truth to you. Their perspective is part of how God speaks.

✦ A Moment to Sit With

Lead Me, Lord

Pray this today: Father, I trust that You want me to know Your will even more than I want to know it. I am not looking for a perfect map, I am looking for Your hand to hold as I walk. Speak clearly. I am listening. And where You lead, I will follow. Then take one step in the direction of what you sense, and watch Him confirm or redirect.

You are not trying to find God's will in the dark. You are walking with a God who is light, who promised to direct your paths when you acknowledge Him, who said His sheep hear His voice, who declared that He has plans for you that are good.

Trust Him. He is not hiding from you. He is leading you, one faithful step at a time.

Father, thank You for being eager to reveal Your will to me. Help me to stay close enough to hear Your voice and responsive enough to follow when You speak. Shape my desires to align with Yours. Lead me one faithful step at a time. In Jesus Name, Amen.

With honesty and hope,
