When we are in pain, we want explanations. We want to know why. We want to understand the reason. We want something to make sense of the suffering.
But the Bible does not give us that. The Bible does not explain why. It does not give us a reason for the pain. It simply shows us what to do in the pain.
Jesus did not explain why He was suffering. He did not give a reason for the pain. He simply stayed present inside it.
That is what we are called to do. Not to understand. Not to explain. To stay. To remain. To be present.
What Jesus Did Not Say
Turn with me to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus is facing the cross. He knows what is coming. And He is in agony.
"Going a little farther, He fell with His face to the ground and prayed: My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will."
Matthew 26:39If it is possible, may this cup be taken from Me.
He asked for another way. He asked for an explanation. He asked for the pain to be taken away.
And the Father did not explain. The Father did not give a reason. The Father simply said no.
Not as I will, but as You will.
That is what Jesus did. He did not get an explanation. He did not get a reason. He got a no. And He stayed.
Then there is this:
"And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground."
Luke 22:44His sweat became like great drops of blood.
That is pain. That is suffering. That is agony.
And there is no explanation. No reason. No understanding.
Just pain. Just suffering. Just staying.
What Jesus Did Not Get
And then there is what Jesus said from the cross. Not explaining. Not giving a reason. But staying.
"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"
Matthew 27:46Why have You forsaken Me?
He asked why. He wanted an explanation. He wanted to understand.
And the Father did not answer. The Father did not explain. The Father did not give a reason.
Just silence. Just suffering. Just staying.
And then there is this:
"Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit."
Luke 23:46Into Your hands I commit My spirit.
No explanation. No reason. No understanding.
Just trust. Just surrender. Just staying.
That is what Jesus did. He did not explain the pain. He did not understand the suffering. He simply stayed present inside it.
The Lesson We Need to Learn
So what does this mean for us? It means that we do not have to understand. We do not have to explain. We do not have to get a reason.
We simply have to stay. We have to remain. We have to be present in the pain.
This is what we forget. We think we need understanding. We think we need explanation. We think we need a reason.
But what we need is presence. What we need is staying. What we need is remaining.
I know this in my own life. I know what it is to want an explanation. I know what it is to ask why. I know what it is to demand a reason.
And I know what it is to not get one. To not receive an answer. To not understand.
But I also know what it is to stay. To remain. To be present in the pain.
That is what Jesus did. That is what we are called to do.
The Presence That Saves
And then there is this, from the Gospel of John:
"Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also."
John 14:1-3Let not your heart be troubled.
Not: Let not your heart be in pain. Not: Let not your heart suffer.
But: Let not your heart be troubled. Do not be anxious. Do not be disturbed. Do not be afraid.
And then: You believe in God, believe also in Me.
Trust. Faith. Staying present.
That is what we are called to do. Not understand. Not explain. Trust. Believe. Stay.
And then there is this:
"I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Matthew 28:20I am with you always.
Not: I will explain everything. Not: I will give you reasons.
But: I am with you.
Presence, not explanation. Staying, not understanding. That is what Jesus gives. That is what we need.
The Staying That Is Hardest
So let me ask you: What are you going through? What pain are you in? What suffering are you experiencing?
Do you want an explanation? Do you want a reason? Do you want to understand why?
You might not get one. You might not understand. You might not get a reason.
But you can stay. You can remain. You can be present.
That is what Jesus did. He did not explain the pain. He did not understand the suffering. He simply stayed present inside it.
And that is what we are called to do. Not to understand. Not to explain. To stay.
Because presence is more important than explanation. Staying is more important than understanding.
That is the lesson of the cross. That is what Jesus taught by staying. By remaining. By being present.
And that is what we are called to do.
Try This Today
Ask yourself honestly: Am I trying to understand why, or am I staying present in the pain? Bring that to Him in prayer. Ask Him to help you stay. To remain. To be present. He did not explain pain. He stayed present inside it.
Jesus did not explain why He was suffering. He did not get a reason for the pain. He simply stayed present inside it.
That is what we are called to do. Not to understand. Not to explain. To stay.
Because presence is more important than explanation. Staying is more important than understanding.
That is the way of the cross. That is what we are called to.
Father, thank You for staying present. Forgive me for needing explanations. Teach me to stay in the pain. To remain. To be present. I do not need to understand. I need to stay. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
