You have not been to church in months. Not because you do not want to, but because you cannot leave your mom alone. She needs help with everything, and you are the one who is there. Every day. All day.
People at church think you are fine. They think you just got busy, dropped off, stopped making it a priority. They do not see the feeding schedules, the medications, the midnight trips to the bathroom, the constant worry.
They do not see you crying in the shower because you do not know how much longer you can do this.
The Work Nobody Talks About
Caregiving is one of the hardest, most invisible forms of ministry there is. It does not get you a title. It does not get you recognized. It does not even get you a break.
You are doing the work that hospitals charge thousands for, and you are doing it for free. In your own home. With your own hands. And most people do not even know.
"Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you."
James 1:27That is you. Right now. This is religion, not as a performance, but as service. God sees it. Even when nobody else does.
The Guilt That Comes
You feel guilty for wanting a break. You feel guilty for wishing it was easier. You feel guilty for being frustrated, for sometimes being angry, for wondering if your life is passing you by.
But you are human. And caregiving is hard. God does not expect you to do it perfectly. He just expects you to show up. And you are showing up. Every single day.
Your sacrifice is not invisible to God. What you are doing matters. And He will not forget it.
Finding Breath in the Hard
You need to take care of yourself too. Not because you are selfish, but because if you burn out, who will take care of them? Ask for help. Find someone who can sit with your loved one for a few hours so you can rest. Take the break when you can.
God does not need you to do this alone. And He does not need you to break yourself in the process.
You are doing something beautiful, even when it does not feel like it. And one day, when everything is made new, He will say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Until then, keep going. He sees you.
Try This Today
Ask for help. Find someone who can sit with your loved one for a few hours so you can rest. You are doing something beautiful, even when it does not feel like it.
Father, thank You for the privilege of caring for this person. Give me strength for each day and grace for the hard moments. Help me to take care of myself so I can continue to care for them. Remind me that my sacrifice is not invisible to You. Thank You for seeing what nobody else sees. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
