Day 8: Resisting the Holy Spirit

11 min read

Stephen's speech in Acts 7. Grieving the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). The warning about pushing back against the Spirit's work and what happens when you resist.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4:30

There is a warning in Scripture that most Christians do not know or choose to ignore. It is the warning about grieving and resisting the Holy Spirit. And it is not a minor matter.

Paul writes to the Ephesian church:

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit. That is a command. And it implies that it is possible. That you can hurt the Spirit. That you can push back against His work in your life.

How do you grieve the Spirit? By ignoring Him. By rejecting His prompting. By continuing in sin when He is calling you to repentance. By resisting the work He wants to do in you.

You stiff-necked people! Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: you always resist the Holy Spirit!

Acts 7:51

Stephen's Warning

Stephen, in his speech to the Sanhedrin, gives an even more stark warning. He talks about the ancestors who resisted the Spirit:

You always resist the Holy Spirit. That is a strong word. Not might resist. Not can resist. Do resist. Habitually. Continually.

And Stephen's point is that this pattern goes all the way back. The ancestors resisted the Spirit. The prophets who were sent to them were resisted. The Messiah who came to them was resisted. And now, Stephen says, you are doing the same thing.

What Does Resisting Look Like?

So what does resisting the Holy Spirit actually look like? Here are some examples:

When you know you should do something and you do not do it. When you feel the Spirit prompting you to speak, and you stay silent. When you sense the Spirit telling you to forgive, and you hold onto the grudge. When you feel the Spirit calling you to surrender, and you cling tighter to control.

That is resisting. That is grieving. That is quenching.

Do not quench the Spirit. Do not put out His fire. Do not suppress His work. Do not ignore His voice.

This is serious. Because the Spirit who lives in you is not just a passive presence. He is actively working. And when you resist His work, you are not just missing an opportunity. You are grieving the One who loves you.

The Consequences

What are the consequences of grieving the Spirit? Paul does not spell out every detail, but the context is clear. In Ephesians 4, he has just been talking about putting off the old self and putting on the new. And then he says do not grieve the Spirit.

The context suggests that when you continue in the old patterns, when you keep living like the old self, when you resist the Spirit's work of transformation, you are grieving Him.

The consequence is not that He leaves. The promise is that the Spirit was given for the day of redemption. He stays. But His work in your life is hindered. His power is quenched. His guidance is ignored.

You miss out on what He wants to do in you.

The Invitation

But here is the good news. The Spirit is patient. He does not give up on you easily. He keeps working. He keeps prompting. He keeps calling.

And the invitation is to stop resisting. To stop grieving. To surrender to the Spirit's work in your life.

This is not about perfection. It is about direction. Are you moving toward the Spirit or away from Him? Are you following His leading or resisting it?

Today is the day to stop resisting. To open the door. To say yes to the Spirit who has been waiting, prompting, calling.

He is in you. He is for you. And He wants to do His work in you. The question is: will you let Him?

✦ A Moment to Sit With

Is there an area where you have been resisting the Spirit? A prompting you have been ignoring? A call you have been refusing? Today is the day to stop. Open the door. Say yes.

✦ ✦ ✦

Father, I confess that I have sometimes resisted Your Spirit. I have ignored His prompting. I have quenched His fire. I have grieved the One who lives in me. Forgive me. I open the door today. I say yes to the Spirit's work in my life. I stop resisting. I stop grieving. Do Your work in me. Transform me. Guide me. Use me. I am Yours. Amen.

This brings us to the end of our eight days together. I hope this series has changed how you think about the Holy Spirit. He is not a vague presence. He is not a theological concept. He is a Person who lives in you, loves you, guides you, gifts you, fruits in you, and intercedes for you. You are not alone. He is with you. And that changes everything.

With honesty and hope,
Claire
