Hearing God Series

Day 7: Acting on What You Hear: Obedience Is the Real Test

7 min read

Hearing God is not the hard part. Doing what He says is. Here is why obedience is the real test of whether you are hearing correctly.

Today's Scripture

James 1:22

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

Most believers do not have a hearing problem. They have an obedience problem. They hear God clearly. They just do not do what He says. And then they wonder why they cannot hear Him anymore. It is not that God stopped speaking. It is that they stopped listening to the last thing He said.

James is blunt. Listening without doing is self-deception. You are fooling yourself if you think you are hearing God when you are not obeying what you already know He has said. Obedience is not the result of hearing God. It is the proof of it. And it is also the pathway to hearing Him more clearly next time.

John 14:21

Teaching

God does not give more direction to the person who ignores the direction He already gave. Obedience is the amplifier. Every time you obey, your ears get sharper. Every time you ignore, they get duller. It is not punishment. It is physics. You cannot hear a voice you are actively walking away from.

Here is the hardest truth about hearing God. The thing He is asking you to do right now is probably the thing you do not want to do. Forgive the person who does not deserve it. Apologize to the person you were wrong to. Give when it does not make financial sense. Wait when you want to run. Speak when you want to stay quiet. Stay quiet when you want to speak. Show up when you would rather hide.

God's voice is not always comfortable. But it is always good. And the goodness of His voice is not measured by how it makes you feel. It is measured by what it produces in you and through you. Obedience produces character. Character produces clarity. Clarity produces confidence. And confidence in God's voice is the most valuable thing a believer can have.

Here is what I want you to do today. Think about the last thing you know God told you to do. The thing you have been putting off. The thing you have been rationalizing, delaying, and hoping He will change His mind about. He will not change His mind. He is waiting for you to move.

Do it. Not tomorrow. Today. Not when you feel ready. Now. And watch what happens. Not because obedience earns you more hearing. Because obedience positions you to hear what He has been trying to tell you all along.

Show myself to them. Not to the person who studies the most. Not to the person who prays the longest. To the person who obeys. Obedience is the doorway to revelation. And revelation is the reward of obedience. They are not separate. They are a cycle. Obey. Hear. Obey more. Hear more. And the cycle never ends because God never runs out of things to say to the person who is willing to do them.

What is the one thing God has been telling you to do that you have been avoiding? Write it down. And then do it. Not because you have to. Because you want to hear His voice more clearly. And obedience is the only path to that clarity.

This is the last day of this series. And I want to close with this. God is speaking. He has been speaking. He will keep speaking. The question was never whether He talks. The question is whether you will do what He says. And the answer to that question will determine everything about your ability to hear Him going forward.

Speak This Out Loud

"God, I want to hear Your voice. And more than that, I want to obey it."

Reflection Questions

Today's Prayer

"God, I want to hear Your voice. But more than that, I want to obey it. Forgive me for the times I have heard You and done nothing. Tune my ears through obedience. Give me the courage to do what You say, even when it is hard. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Final Word

The question is not whether God speaks. The question is whether you will do what He says.

The last day of this series. But not the last thing God will say to you. Keep listening. And more importantly, keep doing.

With honesty and hope, Claire
