Today's Scripture
Hebrews 5:14
"But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."
Yesterday we talked about the five filters. Today we need to go deeper. Because testing what you hear is not just about avoiding mistakes. It is about building a life of discernment that gets sharper over time. And discernment is the difference between a believer who is tossed by every wind and a believer who walks with confidence.
Trained themselves. Not born with it. Not given it in a single moment. Trained. Through constant use. Through practice. Through making mistakes, learning from them, and getting better at recognizing the difference between what is from God and what is not.

Teaching
Discernment is not a spiritual gift reserved for a few. It is a muscle every believer can develop. And the gym is everyday obedience. Every time you obey what you know God has said, your ability to hear what He is saying next gets sharper.
Here is the deeper layer of testing. It is not just about checking boxes. It is about knowing the voice of the One who is speaking. A shepherd does not test every sheep's bleat against a checklist. He knows his sheep's voices because he has spent time with them. The more time you spend with God, the more you recognize His voice without needing a filter. The filters are training wheels. Relationship is the destination.
Here are the three most common ways believers get deceived about what they think God is saying. First, they confuse their own desires with God's voice. You want something badly enough and it starts to sound like God wants it too. That is not hearing God. That is wishful thinking. The filter is simple: if what you think God is saying aligns perfectly with what you already wanted, slow down and test it harder.
Second, they confuse fear with God's voice. The enemy speaks in urgency. God speaks in peace. If the voice you are hearing is frantic, demanding immediate action, threatening consequences if you do not act right now, it is not from God. God is never in a hurry. He is never frantic. He is never threatening.
Third, they confuse other people's opinions with God's voice. Just because someone says "God told me to tell you" does not mean God told them anything. Test everything. Even the words of people you respect. Even the words of your pastor. Even the words of this post. Test everything against Scripture. Test everything against the character of God. Test everything against wise counsel. Test everything against the fruit. Test everything against the peace.
Think about a time when you acted on something you thought God said and it turned out to be wrong. Not catastrophic. Just wrong. What filter did you skip? Was it Scripture? Counsel? Peace? Fruit? Name it. And the next time you hear something, run it through that filter first. That is how discernment grows. Not from perfection. From honest reflection.
Testing is not doubt. Testing is wisdom. Doubt says "God might not be speaking." Testing says "God is speaking, and I want to make sure I am hearing Him correctly." One leads to paralysis. The other leads to confidence. Choose testing.
Speak This Out Loud
"God, give me the wisdom to test what I hear. Help me discern."
Today's Challenge
Think about a time when you acted on something you thought God said and it was wrong. What filter did you skip? Run it through that filter first.
Journal Prompts
- When have I been deceived about what God said?
- Which filter did I skip?
- How can I build better discernment?
Reflection Questions
- Am I testing everything I hear?
- Do I confuse desires with God's voice?
- Am I willing to test even the words of leaders?
Today's Prayer
"God, give me wisdom to test what I hear. Help me not be naive. Help me discern. And help me learn from my mistakes. Amen."
Final Word
Test everything. Not because God is unreliable. Because you are learning.
With honesty and hope, Claire
