Today's Scripture
1 John 4:1
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
This is the question. The one that keeps believers up at night. The one that makes people afraid to act on what they think God is saying. "Is this actually God, or am I just making it up?"
I am not going to give you a formula. There is not one. But I will give you something better: a set of filters that Scripture itself provides. Filters that have been used by believers for two thousand years to test what they think they are hearing.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
Teaching
John did not say "do not listen to any voice." He said test them. Testing implies that some voices are from God and some are not. The goal is not silence. It is discernment. And discernment is a skill you develop, not a gift you are born with.
Here are the five filters. Scripture alignment. The character of God. Wise counsel. The fruit it produces. And the peace it carries. If what you think you are hearing passes all five, it is very likely from God. If it fails even one, set it down.
Filter One: Does It Align with Scripture?
God will never tell you something that contradicts His written Word. Never. If you think God is telling you to leave your spouse, to lie, to manipulate someone, to hoard money, to ignore the poor, it is not God. Period. Scripture is the non-negotiable filter. Everything else is secondary to it.
Filter Two: Does It Reflect God's Character?
God is love. He is patient. He is kind. He is just. He is merciful. He does not shame. He does not rush. He does not panic. He does not condemn. If the voice you are hearing is frantic, shaming, condemning, or cruel, it is not God. The enemy accuses. God convicts. There is a massive difference. Conviction leads to repentance and freedom. Condemnation leads to shame and paralysis.
Filter Three: What Do Wise People Say?
Proverbs says wisdom is found in the multitude of counselors. Take what you think God is saying to someone you trust. Someone who knows Scripture, knows you, and is not afraid to tell you the truth. If they say "that does not sound like God," listen to them. Pride says "God told me, so I do not need anyone's opinion." Humility says "let me test this with people who know more than I do."
Filter Four: What Fruit Does It Produce?
Jesus said you will know a tree by its fruit. If acting on what you think God said produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, it is very likely from God. If it produces anxiety, division, pride, fear, or control, it is not. The fruit does not lie.
Filter Five: Is There Peace?
Colossians 3:15. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts. When you are making a decision and one direction carries a deep, unexplainable peace, that is God speaking. Not the absence of fear. The presence of peace underneath the fear. They are not the same thing. You can be terrified and at peace at the same time. That is the peace of God. And it is one of the most reliable indicators of His direction.
Think about a decision you are facing right now. Run it through the five filters. Scripture? Character of God? Wise counsel? Fruit? Peace? Write down how it scores on each one. If it passes all five, you can move forward with confidence. If it fails even one, wait. God is not in a hurry.
You do not need to be 100 percent sure before you act. You need to be reasonably confident after testing. God is not looking for perfect certainty. He is looking for willing obedience. And He honors the person who tests what they hear and then steps forward in faith.
Speak This Out Loud
"God, help me test what I hear. Give me discernment. I want to recognize Your voice."
Today's Challenge
Think about a decision you are facing. Run it through the five filters. Write down how it scores on each one.
Journal Prompts
- What decision am I trying to make right now?
- How does it score on each filter?
- What do wise people say about this?
Reflection Questions
- Am I testing what I hear?
- Do I have wise counselors helping me?
- Am I willing to wait if it fails a filter?
Today's Prayer
"God, help me test what I hear. Give me wisdom to discern. Help me find wise counselors. And help me trust the peace when it comes. Amen."
Final Word
Test what you hear. Not because God is unreliable. Because you are human.
