Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed a theology of unworthiness. We learned to be suspicious of our own desires, to distrust our emotions, to see ourselves primarily through the lens of our failures. Humility, we were told, means thinking little of yourself.
But this is not what Scripture teaches. The humility of the Gospel is not self-contempt. It is an accurate understanding of who you are, in all your weakness and in all your glory as one made in the image of God and redeemed by His Son.
"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Ephesians 2:10Handiwork. Masterpiece. The Greek word is poiema, from which we get the word "poem." You are God's poem. His creative work. Something He made with intention, with artistry, with delight.
The Danger of False Humility
False humility looks spiritual but it actually dishonors the One who made you. When you dismiss your gifts, minimize your worth, and refuse to step into what God has called you to: you are not being humble. You are disagreeing with God about the value of what He made.
True humility says: "I am nothing apart from Christ, and in Christ, I am everything He says I am." It holds together complete dependence on God and complete confidence in His assessment of your worth. These are not opposites. They are the two hands of a Kingdom identity.
Walking in the Dignity of Who You Are
Acknowledge Your Gifts Without Apology
What has God placed in you? Your ability to encourage, to lead, to create, to serve, to teach, these are not accidents. They are intentional deposits. Name them. Own them. And steward them for the Kingdom without shrinking back.
Speak to Yourself the Way God Speaks to You
Pay attention to your inner dialogue. Would you speak to a beloved child the way you speak to yourself? Begin to bring your self-talk into alignment with what God says, not through empty affirmation, but through the specific, Scripture-grounded truth of who you are in Him.
Step Into What You've Been Avoiding
Is there something God has been calling you toward that you have been backing away from because you don't feel qualified? Take one step toward it today. Not because you have it all together, but because He who calls you is faithful, and He will equip what He has called.
Try This Today
What would change about how you carry yourself, how you use your gifts, how you approach what God has called you to, if you truly believed you were His poem, His handiwork, His beloved creation? Let your answer become a prayer. Then let it become a decision.
You were not made to live small. You were made to carry the glory of God into every room you enter, not through arrogance, but through the quiet, unshakeable confidence of someone who knows whose they are. Walk in that today.
Father, thank You for creating me with intention and artistry. Help me to walk in the dignity of who I am in You, not shrinking back from the gifts You have given me. Teach me to speak to myself the way You speak to me, and to step into what You have called me to with confidence. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
