We have made following Jesus casual. We have reduced it to a prayer prayed, a decision made, a moment at an altar. We have made it a one-time event instead of a way of life. We have made it comfortable instead of costly.
But the way of Jesus is gentle, and it is not casual. It is the most demanding thing you will ever do. It is the most costly relationship you will ever have. It is the most radical lifestyle you will ever live.
Why? Because it is not about what you believe. It is about who you follow. And following Jesus is not passive. It is not casual. It is the opposite of casual. It is the most intentional thing you will ever do.
What Jesus Actually Said
Turn with me to the Gospel of Matthew. A rich young man comes to Jesus and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life:
"Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, 'Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?' So Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.' And he said, 'All these I have kept from my youth.' When Jesus heard this, He said to him, 'One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.' And when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich."
Mark 10:17-22One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.
That is not casual. That is not comfortable. That is not a one-time decision.
Take up the cross. That is what following Jesus means. It means dying to yourself. It means giving up what you love. It means following even when it costs.
And the young man went away sorrowful. Because he had great possessions.
This is what Jesus does. He does not make it easy. He makes it real.
The Cost of Discipleship
And then there is what Jesus says to the crowds:
"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it."
Luke 9:23-24Let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily.
Daily.
Not once. Daily. Every day. This is not a one-time decision. This is a daily dying. This is a daily giving up. This is a daily taking up of the cross.
And then: Whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
That is the promise. But it is not a promise for the comfortable. It is a promise for the costing.
This is what we have forgotten. We have made following Jesus about a prayer, not a cross. We have made it about belief, not following. We have made it about going to heaven, not taking up our cross.
But Jesus said: Follow Me. Not believe in Me. Follow Me.
The Gentleness That Costs
But here is the thing. The way of Jesus is gentle. It is not harsh. It is not demanding. It is not about rules and regulations and requirements.
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
I am gentle and lowly in heart.
That is how Jesus describes Himself. Gentle. Not demanding. Not harsh. Gentle.
But gentleness is not casualness. Gentleness is not relaxed. Gentleness is not about taking it easy.
Gentleness is about the way you approach. The way you love. The way you serve. The way you give. The way you live.
It is gentle. It is not casual.
There is a difference. Casual means: It does not matter much. It is not that important. I can take it or leave it.
Gentle means: I will approach it with care. I will handle it with kindness. I will love without demanding. I will serve without expecting. I will give without keeping track.
But gentle still costs. Gentle is still demanding. Gentle is still daily taking up the cross.
The Daily Yoke
And then there is what He says about the yoke:
"Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
Matthew 11:29-30My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
But it is still a yoke. It is still a burden. There is still something to carry.
And it is easy and light, but that does not mean it is not costly. It means that the cost is worth it. It means that the burden is light compared to what we were carrying before. It means that the yoke is easy compared to the yoke we were under before.
Before Jesus, we were under the yoke of law. The yoke of performance. The yoke of trying to earn our way. The yoke of trying to be good enough.
After Jesus, we are under the yoke of grace. The yoke of following. The yoke of learning. The yoke of abiding.
That is easier. That is lighter. But it is still a yoke.
This is what we forget. We think that because it is grace, it is free. And it is free. But it still costs. It costs our lives.
Following Jesus is free, but it is not cheap. It is a gift, but it is still costly. You do not earn it, but you still give your life to it.
The Question That Matters
So let me ask you: Are you following casually or gently?
Casually means: It does not matter much. I said the prayer. I made the decision. I am good.
Gently means: I am taking up my cross daily. I am denying myself. I am following. I am abiding. I am staying close.
Are you following casually, or are you following gently?
Because there is a difference. The casual follower says: I have decided. I am done. This is checked off.
The gentle follower says: I am learning. I am abiding. I am taking up my cross daily. I am following today.
That is the difference. The casual follower is done. The gentle follower is daily following.
Which one are you?
Following Jesus is gentle. But it is not casual.
It is the most demanding, costly, radical thing you will ever do. And it is the most gentle, kind, loving thing you will ever experience.
That is the mystery. That is the paradox. That is the way of Jesus.
Try This Today
Ask yourself honestly: Am I following casually or gently? Bring that to Him in prayer. Ask Him to help you take up your cross daily. Ask Him to help you follow gently, not casually. The way of Jesus is gentle. But it is not casual.
This is not about being harsh with yourself. This is not about being strict. This is about being gentle, but intentional. This is about being kind, but costing. This is about being loving, but following.
The way of Jesus is gentle. But it is not casual. It costs everything. And it is worth everything.
Take up your cross daily. Follow Him. Gently.
Father, thank You for the gentle way of Jesus. Forgive me for making following casual. Teach me to follow gently. Let me take up my cross daily. Let me deny myself daily. Let me follow You daily. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
