Everything feels loud. The news is loud. Social media is loud. The culture is loud. The voices are many, and they are all competing for our attention.
In the noise, we might expect Jesus to say: Watch out for danger. Watch out for persecution. Watch out for suffering.
But what does Jesus say first? Watch out that no one deceives you.
That is the first warning. That is the primary concern. Not safety. Discernment. Not survival. Seeing clearly.
This is what we forget. When everything feels loud, the greatest danger is not being attacked. The greatest danger is being deceived.
The First Warning
Turn with me to the Gospel of Mark. The disciples have asked about the end times:
"As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. 'Tell us,' they said, 'when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?' And Jesus answered: 'Watch out that no one deceives you. Many will come in My name, claiming, I am the Christ, and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.'"
Mark 13:3-8Watch out that no one deceives you.
That is the first word. Not: Watch out for wars. Not: Watch out for persecution. Watch out for deception.
Why? Because when everything is loud, deception is the easiest. The louder the noise, the easier it is to believe a lie.
This is what Jesus knew. This is what He warned about first.
And then there is this, from Matthew:
"Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ferocious wolves. By their fruits you will recognize them."
Matthew 7:15-16Watch out for false prophets.
They come in sheep's clothing. They look harmless. They sound good. But they are wolves.
That is the danger. Not the obvious enemy. The disguised friend. Not the obvious lie. The convincing truth.
This is what we forget. Deception rarely looks like deception. It looks like truth. It sounds like truth. It feels like truth.
The Loudest Danger
And then there is this, from the same chapter:
"For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the chosen, if that were possible."
Mark 13:22They will perform great signs and miracles.
Not obviously false. Convincingly true. Powerful. Miraculous.
This is the danger. Not the obviously wrong. The convincingly right. The phenomenally convincing.
And then the next verse:
"So be on your guard. I have told you all this in advance."
Mark 13:23I have told you all this in advance.
Why? So that when it happens, you are not deceived. So that when the noise comes, you can see clearly.
This is grace. This is mercy. He warned us first so that we would not be surprised.
The Discernment We Need
So what do we do when everything feels loud? How do we see through the deception?
First, we remember the first warning. Watch out that no one deceives you.
Second, we test by the fruit. Not by the signs. Not by the miracles. By the fruit.
Third, we stay in the Word. Not in the noise. In the Scripture.
Fourth, we pray for discernment. Not for safety. For clarity.
I know what it is to be in the noise. I know what it is to hear so many voices. I know what it is to not know what to believe.
And I know what it is to remember: Watch out that no one deceives you.
That is the first warning. That is what Jesus said first. Not because He wanted to scare us. But because He knew the danger.
When everything feels loud, the greatest danger is deception. Not attack. Deception.
That is what we need to remember. That is what we need to hear.
Try This Today
Ask yourself honestly: What voices am I listening to? Bring that to Him in prayer. Ask Him to help you see through the deception. Watch out that no one deceives you.
Everything feels loud. The noise is overwhelming. The voices are many.
But Jesus still says first: Watch out that no one deceives you.
That is the first warning. That is the primary concern.
Not because He wants to scare us. But because He knows the danger.
When everything feels loud, the greatest danger is deception. Be on your guard.
Father, thank You for warning us first. Forgive me for being deceived. Teach me to be on my guard. Let me see clearly in the noise. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
