One of the most revealing things Jesus ever said about Himself comes in the middle of a busy teaching moment. Crowds pressing in. Questions flying. And then this, quiet and stunning:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28He did not say "come to church." He did not say "come to a programme" or "come to a set of disciplines." He said come to me. The invitation is personal, direct, and breathtaking in its simplicity. Whatever you are carrying: He wants you to bring it to Him.
What It Means to Come
Coming to Jesus is not a one-time event at an altar call. It is the posture of an entire life. It is the daily, sometimes hourly, choice to turn toward Him rather than away, to bring your confusion to Him rather than spiral in it alone, to bring your grief to Him rather than bury it, to bring your joy to Him rather than hoard it.
Coming to Jesus means letting Him be your first response rather than your last resort.
So many of us have the order reversed. We exhaust every other option first, we google, we call a friend, we worry, we strategize, and then, when nothing else has worked, we turn to Jesus. But He is not a backup plan. He is the beginning of every good answer.
The Rest He Promises
The rest Jesus offers is not the rest of inactivity. It is the rest of a soul that has found its home. It is the deep exhale that comes when you stop trying to hold everything together by yourself and remember that He is holding you.
"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
Matthew 11:29A yoke is a shared burden. Jesus is not asking you to put down every responsibility. He is asking you to carry them with Him, in step with Him, at His pace. That changes everything. The same load feels different when you are not carrying it alone.
Try This Today
Take a moment right now to name what you are carrying. The worry, the grief, the uncertainty, the exhaustion. Do not analyze it, just name it. Then, one by one, consciously hand each thing to Jesus. Say out loud: "I give You this." And then receive what He gives back: rest, peace, and the reminder that you are not alone.
You do not have to have it together to come to Jesus. You do not have to be spiritually impressive or emotionally stable or theologically certain. You just have to come. Weary, burdened, confused, hopeful, come exactly as you are.
He has been waiting for you. And His arms are always open.
Jesus, thank you for the invitation to come to you with all my weariness and burden. Teach me to come to you first, not last. Help me to find rest in your presence. I give you everything I am carrying today. In Jesus Name, Amen.
With honesty and hope,
Claire
