Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.
Matthew 25:1-4As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, "Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him."
Matthew 25:5-6The parable of the ten virgins is one of the most misunderstood stories Jesus told. Many people think it's about being ready for the rapture, about having enough good works, about being prepared for judgment. But it's actually about something much deeper: what it means to be the waiting Bride of Christ.
All ten virgins had lamps. All ten virgins were waiting. All ten virgins wanted to meet the bridegroom. The difference was oil. The wise virgins had oil. The foolish virgins didn't.
What does oil represent in Scripture? It represents the Holy Spirit. It represents intimacy with God. It represents the inner reality that fuels the outer activity. It represents the relationship that sustains the waiting.
Many believers today are like the foolish virgins. They have the outward appearance of faith - the lamps, the waiting, the desire to meet Jesus. But they lack the oil - the deep, intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit that sustains them through the waiting.
And here's the crucial point: oil cannot be borrowed at the last minute. You can't get someone else's intimacy with God. You can't borrow their relationship with the Holy Spirit. You can't use their oil to light your lamp when the bridegroom comes.
The Bride of Christ is called to wait. But she's called to wait with oil. She's called to wait with intimacy. She's called to wait with the inner reality that sustains her through the long night of waiting.
Cultivate Your Oil
Today, focus on cultivating your oil - your intimacy with the Holy Spirit. Don't just do religious activities. Spend time in His presence. Listen to His voice. Rest in His presence. Let Him fill you with His oil. Remember: you can't borrow someone else's intimacy with God. You must have your own.
Holy Spirit, fill me with Your oil. Fill me with Your presence. Fill me with Your intimacy. I confess that I have sometimes focused on the outward appearance of faith while neglecting the inner reality. Forgive me for trying to borrow someone else's oil instead of cultivating my own. Today I choose to wait with oil. I choose to wait with intimacy. I choose to wait with the relationship that sustains me through the waiting. Fill me, Holy Spirit. Let my lamp burn brightly because of Your oil within me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
The Bride of Christ waits with oil. She waits with intimacy. She waits with the Holy Spirit. And when the bridegroom comes, her lamp will be burning brightly.
With honesty and hope, Claire
