So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:36For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
2 Corinthians 3:17One of the greatest tragedies in the Christian life is that so many believers live in bondage when they have been given freedom. They live like slaves when they have been made sons and daughters. They live like prisoners when they have been given the keys to the kingdom. They live like beggars when they have been made heirs.
Jesus said it clearly: "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." Not partially free. Not mostly free. Not free in some areas but not others. Free. Completely. Utterly. Without reservation.
But what does this freedom look like? It looks like freedom from the law that condemns. Freedom from the sin that enslaves. Freedom from the fear that paralyzes. Freedom from the performance that exhausts. Freedom from the religion that binds. Freedom from the expectations of others. Freedom from the need to prove yourself. Freedom from the shame of your past. Freedom from the anxiety about your future.
The Bride of Christ is not a Bride who lives in fear of her Bridegroom. She is a Bride who lives in the delight of His love. She is not trying to earn His approval. She is resting in His affection. She is not working for His acceptance. She is living from His acceptance.
This freedom changes everything about how you approach God. You don't come to Him with a list of what you've done right. You come to Him with the confidence that He already loves you. You don't come to Him with fear that He might reject you. You come to Him with the assurance that He has already accepted you. You don't come to Him trying to earn something. You come to Him ready to receive what has already been given.
Live Like You're Free
Today, choose one area where you have been living in bondage instead of freedom. Maybe it's fear of what others think. Maybe it's trying to earn God's approval. Maybe it's shame from your past. Whatever it is, consciously choose to live like you're free in that area today. When the old feeling comes up, say out loud: "Jesus set me free from this. I am free indeed." Notice how this changes your thoughts and actions.
- Where have you been living in bondage instead of freedom? What does that look like in your daily life?
- What would change if you truly believed you were completely free in Christ?
- What fears, anxieties, or performance-based thinking have been keeping you from living in freedom?
- How does knowing you are the Bride of Christ change your understanding of freedom?
- What is the difference between freedom from sin and freedom to live in relationship with God?
- How does knowing you are already accepted change the way you approach spiritual disciplines?
- Can you receive freedom without immediately feeling like you need to do something to maintain it?
Jesus, thank You for setting me free. Thank You for not giving me partial freedom, but complete freedom. I confess that I have sometimes lived like a slave when You made me a son, like a prisoner when You gave me the keys, like a beggar when You made me an heir. Forgive me for living in bondage when You have given me freedom. Today I choose to live like I'm free. Free from fear, free from performance, free from shame, free from anxiety. Help me to walk in this freedom today and every day. Let me live as Your beloved Bride, not as Your struggling servant. In Your powerful name, Amen.
You are not working toward freedom. You are living in it. Jesus has already set you free. The only question is whether you will live like it.
With honesty and hope, Claire
